Our free German PDFs
Grammar cheat sheet
Our most popular download puts the core of German grammar on two pages: the article chart for all four cases, the endings that predict der, die or das, personal pronouns, prepositions by case, all three adjective-ending tables and the basic word-order rules. It’s the companion to our German grammar guide.
Word lists
The 100 most common German words list and the 100 everyday phrases cover what beginners need first. Nouns always come with their article and plural, because that’s how they should be learned.
Verb tables
A full pack of 50 verb conjugation tables is in progress. Until it’s ready, the main conjugation tables (regular verbs, sein, haben, werden and the modal verbs) are in our German verbs guide.
A1 worksheets
The der/die/das worksheet trains the single most important beginner skill: noun gender. It has three parts (choose the article, build compound nouns, form plurals) and an answer key on page 2. Do it once, check your answers, then do it again three days later without looking. More A1 worksheets on pronouns, the accusative and verb conjugation are on the way. For a full overview of the level, see A1 German.
How to study with PDFs
A PDF only helps if you use it actively. Here’s what works:
- Print and cover. Cover the English column of a word list and translate from German, then switch. Mark the ones you miss.
- Test before you read. Try to fill in the article chart from memory before you look at the cheat sheet. Struggling first makes the answer stick better.
- Spread it out. Review the same sheet after one day, three days and a week. Short reviews beat one long session.
- Write your own examples. For every rule on the cheat sheet, write one sentence about your own life.
- Keep it visible. Put the alphabet or particles sheet where you’ll see it daily: your desk, your fridge, your phone’s lock screen.
Why “testing yourself” beats rereading
Rereading feels productive because the material looks familiar, but familiarity isn’t memory. Retrieval practice, actively pulling the answer out of your head, is one of the most reliable findings in learning research. A cheat sheet is most powerful when you use it to check yourself, not just to read.

FAQs
Can I really learn German from PDFs?
PDFs are excellent for grammar reference, vocabulary and writing practice. Combine them with listening and speaking practice, which paper can’t give you.
Do I need to sign up to download?
No. All downloads on this page are free and direct, with no email required.
Is there a free German A1 grammar PDF?
Yes: our German Grammar Cheat Sheet covers the A1-A2 core, and the der/die/das worksheet gives you A1 practice with answers.
Can teachers use these PDFs in class?
Yes, for non-commercial classroom use, as long as you keep the German Simplified credit on the page. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
Where can I find a German grammar book PDF?
Many grammar books shared as free PDFs are illegal copies. Use free official resources (DW, Goethe-Institut) or a good grammar book from a library or bookshop, and our free cheat sheets for quick reference.
Pick one PDF today, not all of them. The grammar cheat sheet and the 30-day plan are the best place to start. Then follow the complete Learn German guide for the bigger picture.
