A1-A2 Word list
If you could learn only 100 German words, which should they be? The answer comes from frequency: a small set of words appears again and again in every conversation, text message and article. This list gives you the 100 most common German words, grouped in four sets of 25, each with its meaning and a short example sentence. Learn these and you’ll recognize a surprising share of everything you hear.
Quick answer
The most common German words are small, everyday words: der/die/das (the), und (and), sein (to be), in, ein (a), zu (to), haben (to have), ich (I), werden (to become) and nicht (not). The top 100 basic German words cover articles, pronouns, the key verbs, question words and a few essential nouns like Zeit (time), Tag (day) and Mensch (person).
This list is part of our German vocabulary hub. Exact rankings differ slightly between frequency studies, so we’ve combined spoken and written usage and added a few words every beginner needs from day one.
Why frequency lists work
Language follows a steep curve: the top words do most of the work. In almost any German text, words like der, und, ist, nicht and ich show up constantly, while words like Staubsauger (vacuum cleaner) appear once in a blue moon. Learning by frequency means every hour of study pays off in more sentences you understand.
The memory angle
Frequent words are also the easiest to keep, because you meet them everywhere. Each encounter is a free review. That’s why beginners who start with frequency lists feel progress faster: their brain gets constant reinforcement from real German.
